10. 1984, George Orwell

Orwell’s dystopian novel is set in a world of war, tyranny and surveillance where characters are constantly reminded “Big Brother is watching you”.

His work continues to influence modern day culture and the term Orwellian is used to describe totalitarian practices.

9. The Remains of the Day, Kazuo Ishiguro 

The poignant novel is told from the point of view of Stevens, an elderly butler who makes a series of chilling revelations about his life.

Novelist Ishiguro was born in Japan and moved to England in 1960 with his family at the age of five.

8. The Catcher in the Rye, J D Salinger

The controversial novel is the story of Holden Caufield, who has become known as an archetypal ‘cynical adolescent’.

J D Salinger was a famously secretive author who rose to prominence in the 1950s with the Catcher in the Rye.

7. A Fine Balance, Rohinton Mistry  

The acclaimed novel looks at sweeping changes in Indian society and follows the lives of ordinary people struggling to survive.

Mistry’s novel starts in the mid-1970s during a state of emergency in India.

6. Lord of the Rings, J R R Tolkien

Lord of the Rings has been turned into a hugely popular films, but it is still well worth reading this epic fantasy novel.

Tolkien’s mythical universe is inhabited by hobbits, dwarfs, elves, orcs, wizards and other beings.

5. Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë

Wild passions and desolate landscapes fill Wuthering Heights, which tells the story of the intense love between Cathy and Heathcliff.

Emily Brontë grew up with her talented sisters Charlotte and Anne in the North Yorkshire village of Haworth.

4. Great Expectations, Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens is one of Britain’s greatest writers and Great Expectations is one of his most famous novels.

The story follows the journey of young Pip who encounters other memorable characters such as the escaped convict Magwitch and Miss Havisham.

Acclaimed US novelist Toni Morrison provides a haunting insight into the brutality of slavery and its aftermath.
