Chetan Bhagat was born to a Punjabi family in Delhi, on 22nd April 1974. He was an excellent student in school and was noticed to have an insatiable drive to succeed in life. After completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT, Delhi, Bhagat went on to IIM, Ahmedabad to get a management degree. He worked there for more than a decade and during his time there, he slowly came to realize his passion for writing. He wrote his first novel, Five Point Someone, while he was in Hong Kong. Bhagat took the decision to leave his job and a luxurious life at Hong Kong and shift to Mumbai in order to pursue his dreams of writing. In numerous interviews and online blogs, he has said that this was the most difficult decision of his life.
Chetan Bhagat’s first book, Five Point Someone, was a commercial success and sold over a million copies worldwide. It narrated the story of three IITians as they try to beat the monotonous education system of the country. It also inspired the 2009 Bollywood movie 3 Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani. After the success of Five Point Someone, Bhagat went on to write commercially successful novels like One Night @ the Call Center, The 3 Mistakes of My Life, 2 States, and Half Girlfriend – all of which were adapted into popular Bollywood movies.
